About the Artist
Like my father before me, I've always been fascinated by portraiture. I love the wonderful translucency of skin and the way eyes can pull you right into a person's soul. Working primarily with Prismacolor colored pencils and Odorless Turpenoid, I'm able to create unusually rich tones and smooth textures that bring my subjects to life on paper.
I've been the creative type as far back as I can remember, always involved in some new project. Storytelling, writing, sculpting, drawing, doll-making, jewelry design, wood carving, stained glass art, toy making, and embroidered portraiture--I've done it all.

My father was professional oil portrait artist and muralist William Francis Vandeveer Kughler (1901-1971). One of his most famous projects was a series of fourteen murals commissioned by the Joseph Palmer Knapp Foundation, depicting events and themes important to the development of North Carolina.
I can still remember my father setting up a huge drawing pad for me next to his easel when I was only a tiny thing, and the two of us drawing together in the backyard. Is artistic drive genetic? I have no idea. But I am always happiest when I am creating.
